Stories From the Quilt

The 47,000 panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt are a tangible demonstration of love and loss, life and determination. Here are seven stories from the Quilt.

A Bronx Tale

After her mother died of AIDS, native New Yorker Shacazia Brown took a look around and saw that many more children like her were struggling without support, so she decided to do something about it.

The Voice of a Generation

Jamar Rogers, the 30-year-old HIV-positive contestant on NBC's singing competition The Voice, has quickly become a fan favorite. Although he certainly has the musical talent to back up the support he has amassed, it is his candid interviews about his previous drug use and his inspirational insights on living life that have captivated the HIV community.

Tinderbox Author Hopes to Ignite Dialogue About HIV Prevention

Tinderbox, a new book coauthored by journalist Craig Timberg and Daniel Halperin, PhD, compares colonialism’s role in the early spread of HIV in Africa with today’s international efforts to combat the virus. In a provocative move, Halperin and Timberg juxtapose present-day international HIV experts with cutthroat, profit-driven colonials.

A Piece of Me

The National Disease Research Interchange is one of the only nationwide programs collecting tissues and organs from HIV-positive people, both live and deceased, to help advance AIDS treatment and cure research. AIDSmeds editor-in-chief Tim Horn learns more about its HIV donor program before deciding whether or not to sign on the bottom line.
